Our league was formed over 25 years ago by the Men's council of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. It was primarily organized as a recreational outlet for girls in the parish. It grew and became a self-governing organization with an elected board of directors and was then known as Holy Spirit Girls Softball League. The select program was known as the Saints. Later, the League was opened to school age girls of all denominations and became well-known through the area. In 1994, it was decided that a name change was needed to more appropriately represent our demographics and goals. On January 1st, 1995 the League officially became the Northern Virginia Girls Softball Association and is now a totally independent organization. The Saints became the Fairfax Firebirds, now Firebirds Fastpitch. The Firebirds practice year round and play in numerous games and tournaments throughout the spring, summer and fall.
In 2015 NVGSA launched our Dimensions program. This program augments our recreational league in spring, summer, and fall by providing selected players who also play in our house league with additional competitive softball opportunities. Dimensions can be thought of as an intermediate step between recreational softball and travel softball.
Though participation numbers are ever changing from season to season, NVGSA has generally experienced a steady rate of growth. Strong participation throughout Fairfax County and Northern Virginia means that we have girls playing all over the area. Take a look at our locations to see exactly where we play.
